A Croupy Day

Well I haven't blogged recently because nothing eventful has happened. All I've been doing for the past month is trying to finish my statistics class and between lessons Brian and I watch Battlestar Galactica. Although both things I have really enjoyed, I figured no one else would really care and they would stop reading my blog  if that's what I blogged about!

But something eventful did happen, so that is why I am now blogging. Several days ago James seemed like he had some allergies or a mild cold, but his condition just seemed to worsen. Early Thursday morning he woke up crying at about 5 AM and was having a very hard time breathing. When he breathed was wheezing and his chest was moving very oddly like he was really struggling. I panicked and called my mom. My mom being very smart and wise said that it is most likely Croup and that we should go immediately to the ER. So that's what we did. We got there at 5:45 AM and we were immediately seen.

They monitored his oxygen saturation levels, which were too low, hanging around low to mid 80. This of course made the attending doctor nervous, so he put him on oxygen which James absolutely hated! He fought and fought and fought it! And my mom was right, it was Croup, or something like it. They made him breathe in some medication which was even worse because we had to restrain him. And he twisted and screamed and flailed his body. He certainly lets his opinion known. Wonder where he gets that from...?

James finally gave into the oxygen, but only when he fell asleep. And soon after I was asleep too. It was an early morning for mom too! At around noon we were admitted to the hospital for further observation. James ended up having to spend the night to keep him on oxygen.

He needed to have the oxygen tube taped to his face because he refused to wear it. Poor little kid! The next day he was acting like his usual chipper self again and his oxygen levels were improving, so after monitoring him for the morning they said we were good to go home! The doctors and nurses were so sweet and patient with James through all of his fussing and crying. I am so grateful to them for helping us get through a tough couple of days. Having a sick kid in the hosptial is so hard. I'm so grateful James' condition improved and that he is overall a healthy a little boy!

  1. Oh sad! Poor James! I'm glad to hear he is doing better. For some reason, I never expect kids to get sick in the summer, because sickness is for wintertime (of course, right?), so it's always doubly sad when they do get sick in summer. And to end up in the hospital. That's like quadruply sad.

  2. Erin-
It was definitely quadruply sad! Yup Croup is typically seen in the winter, just our luck! But we are glad he make a quick recovery.
